Beautifully illustrated! Charlie has an eye for design and implements it in a unique simple way. Not just for children who want to learn their abcs, but for adults who want to teach their children about art.

We got this book for our daughter and she loves it. However, in reading the book, there are some inconsistencies.

Most pages feature a letter and an animal that corresponds to that letter. Except for three letters.

'W' features a web, which is at least still a noun

'U' features "underwater", which delves into adjectives.

The kicker is 'X', which features "count the X's", a complete departure from the style of every other page.

I appreciate the challenges of finding works from Charley to match each letter, but some consistency for young minds would have been appreciated.

The "U is for Underwater" page really grabbed my attention. There are 3 molecules illustrated above a scene of water and lightning. Guess what - it's the origin of life on Earth!

The left molecule is CH3NH2 - Methylamine, the simplest primary amine.

The center molecule is NH2CH2COOH - Glycine, the smallest of the 20 amino acids.

The right molecule is CH3CHO - Acetaldehyde, which can condense with cyanide and ammonia to give, after hydrolysis, the amino acid Alanine, which is the next largest amino acid.

Simple organic molecules like these are thought to have been formed by lightning or hydrothermal vents, and to have been the building blocks of life in the waters of the ancient Earth.

Not the sort of thing you'd expect to find in an ABC book!

I just received this book, and there's a print error in it: there are two pages for "B", but no page for "A".

I purchased this book for a little variety from all the other board books on my infant daughter's shelves. I wouldn't use this book as a primary ABC book since some of the illustrations may be confusing to a young child, but it does serve well as an alternative. The illustrations are beautiful, sometimes whimsical.

I bought this chunky book to read with great niece Kaylen, who loves all animals. Turning 4 years old, she will ooh & aah for every animal, all while unknowingly learning the alphabet and an appreciate for Harper's artistry. This book is a treasured treat for both of us!
